Feminist Hack Meetings #3
Feminist Futurotopixs

At Varia + online
Saturday 06/11/2021
11:00-13:00 CEST

#Spideralex will introduce us to Feminist #Futurotopixs. This workshop will enable participants to dream, invent and desire together feminist #technologies. They will invent narratives, speculative fiction and radical imaginaries that work as alternatives to existing oppressive or dystopian models. The workshop is oriented at co-designing stories and creating new worlds as processes to imagine and #dream together about feminist desired futures.

F(eminist)H(ack)M(eetings), organised by Artemis, Angeliki and Julia, are a series of research meetings and workshops that explore the potentialities and imaginaries of feminist technological collectives. These gatherings aim to challenge who counts as a hacker, and what counts as hacking. More:

It's International Repair Day!

"A day to promote and celebrate the value of fixing"

Fix shit or cry trying, as the saying goes. I've got a toy laptop, a sewing machine and a pair of jeans to fix.

@silverwizard the problem is mostly with the websocket protocol, which i haven't deployed before. but thanks anyway.

@compl4xx there is nothing wrong with apache though. it's the other projects which opt for nginx. has it become a trend?

configuring apache as proxy has us stuck now. online examples are minimal and from two years ago and earlier.

anyone who serves peertube behind apache? docs support only nginx

we had a full day workshop with the other sysadmins installing peertube. The most fun part was going through the specs of our server. Here are the commands we used for checking:
disk space
df -h

hardware ram
free -h
dmidecode -t 17

bandwidth (varies based on client)
iperf -s (from server)
iperf -c <domain> (from client)

Last month, i took part in an art book/zine fair. Out of more than 1k visitors throught the weekend, 5 persons were interested in my nerdy zines+prints, and only 2 understod it and bought sthg. That was in athens, a capital of 5m ppl. I feel the same when i (rarely) post in IG, or used to post to FB, twitter. Am happy i ve found a mind-like community here. Even if it's not IRL.

📙 Your Computer Is on Fire, 2020

The article “Typing is dead” by Thomas S. Mullaney is about the QWERTY keyboard and shows why the keyboard is NOT the interface. – “Whether for Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Burmese, Devanagari, or any number of other non-Latin scripts, one could not simply “rearrange” one’s way out of this technolinguistic trap.”

📄 Débora Prado, Community networks and feminist infrastructure: Reclaiming local knowledge and technologies beyond connectivity solutions, 2019

“So, feminist infrastructures include servers, networks, cables, antennas, software, hardware, and the use of electromagnetic spectrum, protocols, and algorithms. But they also include spaces, temporalities, priorities, relationships between humans and machines, and agreements …”

I spoke to artist Joana Moll about her new piece for the Media Wall at The Photographers' Gallery last week.

We discussed microprocessors, their impact on the environment and the role of artists and the art world in the transition to a less polluting society.

📓 made this little zine today about this creature living in the mini fridge. We had to remove it, because the fridge is really small

📄 Radio Is My Bomb: A DIY Manual For Pirates, 1987

“… a wonderfully dated guide to pirate broadcasting. Mostly aimed at activists it covers everything from laws (including going to court and getting gear back), existing stations, equipment and basic ethics to name but a few parts in it’s 72 pages.”
